Spring Break on the Crooked

Took a father/son combo from Canby out to the Crooked River today for some spring break trout fishing.  We had a very interesting day.  Sometime in the late morning/early afternoon the dam releases got bumped from 78 cfs to over 140 cfs, turning the water from crystal clear to the usual Crooked River brown and there was lots of drifting grass and moss.  Needless to say, that pretty much killed the fishing up near the dam.  We immediately jumped in the rig and raced down river to get ahead of the "wave" and had a very productive 2.5 hours of dry fly fishing before the surge of water hit us and killed the fishing once again.  We headed back up to the dam, caught a few more trout on nymphs and called it a day.  Considering the variables we dealt with, we were fortunate to have both a good day of fishing and catching.  It's that time of year, make sure you check the flows before you head out.  Anything under 400 cfs(ish) should offer good fishing opportunities as long as the river has been stable for a day or two.
