STEELHEAD: The fish are spread out from the mouth all the way up to Warm Springs. Some folks are getting fish every time out, others are complaining about how slow the fishing seems. Get out there, cover lots of water, and it will happen. Floating line tactics are still working for some, but many anglers have made the switch to sink tips and bigger flies like articulated leeches and marabous. As usual, nymph fishermen have been making some pretty respectable catches of steelhead in the upper river between Warm Springs and Trout Creek. A large stonefly nymph with an October caddis pupa as a dropper is a proven steelhead combination.
TROUT: Fishing has been very good. Most fishermen are ignoring the redsides in their pursuit of steelhead. Unpressured fish have been feeding opportunistically on various caddis and mayfly hatches throughout the day. Sight casting to risers in backeddies has been excellent the last couple of weeks. Proper presentation of the fly has been far more important than exact pattern. October caddis pupa and adults are getting the attention of a few trout. A big orange stimulator fished tight to the bank near dark can bring some violent strikes.
