The Crooked has been a consistent producer this season. The water level bumped a bit last week, but things have come back down to around 125cfs as of ths writing. That is low, which makes reading water pretty simple. Look for BWO hatches to be good, especially on the cloudy days. Don't be alarmed too much by the snow that is falling right now, BWO's like that kind of weather and the fish don't seem to mind either. There will be plenty of opportunity to dead drift scuds, midges and small BWO nymphs as well. The fish may respond better to these tactics in the earlier or latter parts of the day. The surface activity in the winter months should be the most prolific around the warmest parts of the day. This is a great place to spend a cold winter day, as the hatches are decent, the weather is usually not as snowy and there are lots of fish to play with. Hint: take a few pieces of wood, start a fire while taking a break at lunch in one of the many BLM areas that border the river.
