Green Drakes and the Metolius

When the weather report says mid 60's and overcast, there isn't better weather for big mayflys. This means, the Metolius River should be seeing some Green Drakes already. When these bugs come off, the fish can turn on fast to these big juicy bugs. Look for fish working and don't be afraid to fish some of the faster riffles. Fish will not be as finiky compared to a long flat where the fish can look at your bug for some time. In a riffle, the fish has to have a quick reaction time. Make sure to have some different variteis of Green Drakes in your box. Along with the Drakes, there should be some baetis, Pmd's, and caddis. This is arguably one of the better times to fish the Metolius River so don't miss out on the opportunity to fish the Green Drake hatch.

Bull Trout are in fewer numbers now as the resident Bulls will be the majority of the fish. The lake fish will push up the river later summer as the follow the Kokanee up. The resident bulls will eat streamers. Not a bad idea to have a sink tip to get down in some of the deeper pools. Fish big ugly streamers, even some bigger saltwater fly patterns can do the trick.
