The Lower Deschutes stonefly hatch is in full swing right now from Warm Springs down to the Mouth. Don't let the gloomy weather discourage you from getting out. The bugs are hunkering down in the grass with the cool air temps, but fish are still looking for them on the surface. Don't expect lights out fishing on the big bugs unless the weather warms a little, but anglers willing to cover water will be rewarded. Even with the commercial availability of the Chubby Chernobyl in short supply, it seems like that is the pattern most people are throwing out there and the fish are catching on. If you are rising lots of fish to the Chubby, but not hooking up it's time to switch it up! Norm Woods, Clark Stones, Rogue Foams, etc. are all great patterns that you should have in the box. Caddis and mayfly hatches, including green drakes, are also gaining momentum right now and are providing great mid-day dry fly opportunities. A great tactic is to hang a small X-Caddis or Parachute Adams as a dropper off your big stonefly dry. See you on the water!
