Bull Trout are throughout the lower system of the Metolius river. Bulls can be easily spotted in runs or in tight to the bank. Normally when you spot one there is another close by. Throwing large streamers and large I mean, as large as you can throw can pay off. There have been plenty of instances where Bulls will eat other small rainbows and whitefish. Good movement in how you present your streamers can make a huge difference. Twitching, stripping, pausing, and swinging are all good ways to entice Bulls to crush your streamer. Using sink tips can also make a huge difference. Nymphing for trout can produce Bulls as well. Pheasant tails, wd40's, rainbow warrior's and egg patterns are great patterns to use.
Trout fishing is hit or miss. Keep a close watch on back eddies. Typically bows will hang in the eddies looking for midges, and blue wing olives. The trout are awesome on the Metolius and truley are beautiful fish. The rainbows can be picky. Fluorocarbon tippet and fine presentations are a must for catching these fish. The Metolius River never disappoints even if you come home with a goose egg. Enjoy!
