Stonefly time

The Stonefly hatch is in full swing. The water is a bit high, but don't let that deter you. These bugs are along any grass banks and in and around the trees lining the banks. The higher water actually creates more "fishy" zones and allows the trout to hold tight along the banks and intercept any big bug that loses it's hold on the vegetation. There are lots of opinions and theories about this hatch, but all I can say is you have to be there to have success. The good days can come and go quickly and if you wait for a positive report, it may be too late. The old, should have been here yesterday story. We have a couple weeks left, so take any opportunity you have to check this hatch out, you may just hit the jackpot and have one of those epic days that you'll remember forever. Work hard and move often. Scrambling up and down the banks and finding those tight treed and grassy spots is important to success. Most casts will be within ten feet of the bank. Use "heavy" tippet, 3x or so, and keep leaders shorter than the length of your rod.
