Theresa and I made a quick evening trip up to Sunset and motored up below Dillon Falls to see if we could get into any fish and to do a quick BBQ on the bow of the boat. We started in the braids that flow into the pool at the base of the falls and enticed a couple fish up to our stonefly dries, but nothing of any size.
We proceeded to fish from the boat on river right of the falls, just at their base, and found a few nice fish in there. Only rainbows to start, which surprised me. We were fishing a two-fly rig with a white -winged Chubby above a Pickle and had good action on both flies.
Next we tried the left side of the falls tailout and found some really good smaller fish action on that side on a Psycho Prince below a Chubby. Theresa hooked into one hog that was able to hold impressively well in the strongest current below the falls for a few minutes. Looked to be a big Brown when we briefly got a look at it before the hook pulled out.
Despite the fun fishing, the Rib Eye steak, fresh Copper River Salmon, sweet corn and baked potatoes took the prize as the highlight of the evening.
