Saturday June 16th
My son, Eric, and I fished Big Lava last Saturday and had a good time. The lake hadn't quite come back on after all of the unsettled weather, but we caught decent numbers of 'bows on both dries and indicators on what appears to have been a slow day for most anglers. The hot nymphs early were small, all black chironomids or AP Blacks. After the dry fly bite slowed around 1PM, size 16-18 Red Copper Johns seemed to fish better. In between, there was a pretty strong dry fly bite despite there not being that many bugs on the water. Both thorax style and extended body calebaetis got almost a grab a cast. We watched many fishermen sit in one spot for a fish here & and fish there, but we moved around a lot and it paid off. Lava should just get better as the shallows warm and the hatches get going in earnest . . . until it just gets too hot and the fish go deep. Tight lines - Jeff
