Fishing the early steelhead season on the Lower Deschutes is the time to experience HOT HOT FISH!!! I have been lucky enough to tie into one of those hot, wild, chrome fish that are full of piss. Floating down the river with Andy Archer who just purchased his very own drift boat was a great way to get away from the road side of things between Beavertail and Macks. Fishing the D so far has been challenging and putting your time on the water and covering much as possible is key to success. As of always, maximize your shade sessions. Get out early and fish last light because those are the best times. During the hot afternoons when the sun is high, fish tips or get down deep nymphing. If you haven't fished the D early and haven't tied into a fresh chrome fish, then I seriously recommend you get down there ASAP!
