Deschutes Caddis

The Lower Deschutes should improve substantially in the next few days.  For the caddis hatches to improve, we need more consistent, hot temperatures which we should see by the end of this week.  In the mornings, fish the banks and eddy's with spent caddis patterns or mayflies.  Once the sun gets high, fish dries in the shade (under trees, along the banks, etc.) or nymph the riffles with small caddis and mayfly pupa/emergers.  Once the sun begins to dip below the canyon walls, and the sunlight is off the water, be prepared for the evening caddis hatch.  This is a great time to catch the famous deschutes "redsides" on dry flies.  Some of our favorite caddis patterns are: Elk Hair Caddis (sz.14, 16), X-Caddis (sz. 14, 16), and the edible emerger (sz. 14, 16).
