Steelhead on the Mind and Trout Taking Tiny Dries

August is the month on the Deschutes where fishing for trout is tricky. By this time of year, the resides have seen everything us fishermen have to offer. The best way to catch trout this time of year is too fish deep beneath trees using tiny little caddis patterns or  small attractor dry flies in sizes 18 to 20. These fish want your A-GAME! The best presentations and small tippet sizes can be a key to success on the Deschutes. Make sure to focus on shade, and especially once the sun leaves the canyon in the evening can be one of the most producutive times.
Well the rumor is out that Steelhead are entering the Deschutes at the mouth of the Columbia and have been caught throughout the lower river. It is time to seriously consider getting that spey rod ready and getting down to the Deschutes. Make sure to keep an eye on the water temperatures this time of year because when the temps are hitting seventies, the fish are going to be sluggish and fragile. Mornings are always your best bet before the sun hits the water. So get out there and chase that sea-run fish that we have all been waiting for!!
