Well I know at least for me when steelhead are around, trout fishing is down on the priority list. Steelhead have been present in the lower river. Maupin down to the mouth is your best bet for tying into a steel. It will not be long however to be able to catch them throughout the entire river. So get that spey rod ready!
Trout fishing right now is the most challenging it will get. With hot temperatures and PHD trout, they will be in the fast riffles and deep under overhanging tress. If you go down to the lower for trout, have lots of small dries and attractors to fish for the risers in the shade. Nymphing can be productive with little caddis pupas, berry nymphs, and all your small beadheads. Its time for transitioning to the steelhead game!
